TruKid - All natural Skincare for Kids

As I was going through our medicine cabinet, I realized we needed to replace our sunscreens. Why? Well, take a look at this list of commonly found ingredients in sunscreens.

* Benzophenone (oxybenzone) – present in most sunscreens; easily absorbed through the skin; causes irritations and allergies; and is a hormone disrupter. Also used in many other personal care products.

* Padimate-O – found to cause DNA damage which can lead to cancer.

* Avobenzone – easily absorbed through the skin; degrades and becomes ineffective within one hour.

* Diethanolamine (DEA) - may lead to cancer causing compounds if the sunscreen contains nitrites; is often not disclosed on sunscreen labels.

Most sunscreens also contain parabens (hormone disrupters) and synthetic fragrances (contain up to 4,000 different chemicals, and can cause allergies and asthma). Note that, children’s developing organs are more vulnerable to damage from chemical exposures and more sensitive to low levels of hormonally active compounds.

As neat as it is to make my own products, it's time-consuming and costly in terms of that process being mainly trial and error. I also don't want to concoct anything that may not be up to par to protect my children's skin.

So I went on a search for natural skincare products for my children. TruKid, a California-based company, looked really appealing for a lot of reasons.

All of the products are non-toxic, FREE of Parabens, Phthalates, Gluten, BPA, pertoleum, and any harsh chemicals.
The all natural company focuses on healthy hygiene habits and promoting products in a fun and educational way for children. While I was browsing the website and product lines, I came across the "Just for Kids" section and found really funny songs. My kids find them hilarious, especially the Smelly Feet song.


I was given the opportunity to try out two of items off their product line.

 Sunny Days all natural sunscreen is SPF 30+. It protects just as well as any other sunscreen we've used and smells MUCH better, like fresh fruit almost. It's a thick, creamy sunscreen and a little goes a long way. Which is a great way to have a favorable product last, and save money; since we apply and re-apply sunscreen like mad around here. I'm fair skinned as is our youngest, Lily and no one really likes a sunburn anyway. Another plus for Sunny Days, it leaves your skin feeling soft and smooth, not greasy or sticky.
The girls' took notice right away of the "stick figure." I explained that the stick figure represents what part of the body the product is used for. TruKid employs a "TruKid Learning System" on their products that educate children in a really clever way on what part of the body the product is for (face, hair, body, etc.). Another really cool part about them is that their brightly colored bottles are actually a coding system, blue for cleansing, green for nourishing, and orange for sun protection. Which brings me to the second product I was able to check out. We LOVE the bottle (because it's the little things!)

 TruKid Bubbly Body Wash comes in a brightly colored blue bottle that's really cheerful looking. 

The pump has a cute green spiral tube that just adds to it's adorable-ness.

We like this product as both a body wash and a bubble bath. Unlike a lot of natural body cleansers I've come across, Bubbly Body Wash has a really nice lather. It also has the same yummy smell as the Sunny Days. I know that lather doesn't equal cleaner, but it's the old familiarities I appreciate.

Both of these products were everything I was looking for. Chemical free, kid-friendly, from a company that not only values healthy habits for children but our environment as well. They replace traditional materials with ones that are biodegradable or recyclable and partner with organizations whose mission is also to create a healthy and happy planet. That's an approach to business I respect.

I definitely recommend you read the labels of your current skin "protection" and make an informed decision.
